Sustainability

Daftö for the future

Here, we present the sustainability efforts at Daftö. It's an ongoing process where we strive to make it easy for our guests to make the right choices during their visit. Together, we want to take steps in the right direction toward a sustainable future.

Our year-round staff are ambassadors and advocates for our sustainability efforts. Through workshops and training, we have together identified what we are doing today, and what's important for the future – all connected to the global goals for sustainable development.

Our commitment to Jontefonden

A partnership close to our hearts is with Jontefonden, an organisation who supports children in need of organ transplants. It's a matter of life and death for these children, but also deeply affects their families. Through counselling, community, and social activities, they help make the situation easier to bear, bring joy in the moment, and provide round-the-clock support for 400 children and their families.

What can you do as a guest to reduce environmental impact and contribute to sustainable development during your stay?

By choosing us as your holiday destination, you help us continue to developing the resort into a more sustainable place to visit. Here are some tips on how you can contribute during your adventure on Daftö. Together we can reduce the environmental impact.

  • Turn off the light when leaving your accommodation.
  • Sort your waste and dispose of it at the designated recycling stations.
  • Use only as much water as you actually need.
  • Keep windows closed when the heaters are on.
  • Only flush toilet paper down the toilet.
  • Charge your electric car at the charging stations by the reception or the hotel, not in your accommodation's power outlets.
  • Leave PET bottles and cans in the Pantamera recycling bins on-site. Not only will they be recycled, but the deposit refund is donated to a good cause – Jontefonden, a foundation supporting children and young people who are waiting for or have undergone organ transplants, along with their families.
  • Don't litter, and help pick up any trash you see around the area. "Three pieces of trash a day" is something we often talk about at Daftö. Picking up just three pieces of trash a day may not seem like much, but imagine if everyone did it – how much cleaner the environment would be!
  • Take the opportunity to enjoy nature – go for a walk or a workout.
  • Most importantly, recharge your own energy for the well-being of you and your family.

End-of-school graduation

Every year, together with Strömstad municipality, we invite all primary school students and one guardian per child to a day at Daftöland. This is where the end of school year is celebrated and the summer break officially begins. It's a gift we're happy to give to the children in the community – especially in times of rising costs and less money for leisure activities. Information about this year's celebration is shared through the schools.

"Hållbarhetsklivet" - for a sustainable hospitality industry

"Stepping up sustainability" is an initiative led by The West Sweden Tourist Board, bringing together public and private stakeholders who work towards a more sustainable tourism industry.

Together, we create economically sustainable businesses and tourism that doesn't cause unnecessary environmental impact.

Stepping up sustainability is based on four key principles. Below, you can see these principals and learn how we at Daftö incorporate sustainability into each of them.

As little unnecessary environmental impact as possible

Travel always has an environmental impact, but the extent depends on the mode of transport, travel distance, length of stay, consumption, and behaviour on-site. Everyone is welcome to Daftö, but our marketing strategy focuses heavily on the local area and those within about a two-hour travel distance to Strömstad. The shorter the journey, the less CO2 emissions. We also encourage guests to stay longer, which reduces transportation, cleaning, laundry needs, eases pressure on the reception, and enhances the guest experience by allowing more time to enjoy everything included in the stay.

Good for both residents and visitors

Attractive places to live are often also attractive places to visit. Incoming visitors are almost always a prerequisite for a place to offer a wide range of restaurants, shops, and other services. At Daftö, we provide a variety of activities and experiences for both day visitors and accommodating guests. Our growth positively impacts the local community by creating more summer job opportunities for young people, increasing tax revenue for the municipality, and expanding the range of activities available to residents – including experiences at the Daftöland amusement park.

More visitors when not fully booked

For the most part, the only time it's difficult to find accommodation at Daftö is during weeks 28-31, when pre-booking is necessary. During the rest of the summer, we offer a wide range of activities, an open amusement park, restaurants with entertainment, and lower accommodation prices to encourage quests to visit across more weeks. A more even distribution of visitors over a longer period benefits both our staff and the guest experience – reducing queues and allowing more time for adventure. For certain periods, we have developed new concepts, such as Spöktober during the Swedish and Norwegian autumn school breaks. Spöktober features spooky-themed activities at Daftöland, haunted train rides around the resort, and Ghost party in restaurant Packhuset. It's a frightfully fun time both for guests and staff. This is just one of many ways we extend our season and create new reasons to visit us.

More full-time jobs and stronger businesses

The hospitality industry is a key driver of employment. It also plays an important role in integration by providing jobs for many people with foreign backgrounds and serving as a stepping stone into the job market for young people. A steady flow of visitors throughout the year creates conditions for increased profitability and more full-time positions. At Daftö, there are great opportunities for year-round employment after completing a summer season. With a variety of roles within the company, employees also have the chance to try different roles throughout the year and grow within the organisation.
